Port of Auckland - Infrastructure Upgrade Projects
Project Management (client side), engineering design & construction methodology oversight, layout design, Health and Safety management including Safety in Design of changes to existing infrastructure for the Port of Auckland.
Fergusson Terminal 4-High Transition Programme
Challenge / Objective
The Port initiated a major upgrade to transition the full Fergusson Container Terminal to 4-high stacking, enabling increased yard capacity and operational efficiency. This programme required upgrades to straddle fleets, yard infrastructure, pavements, electrical systems, and operational layouts.
The challenge was delivering a large programme made up of multiple sub-projects within a live 24/7 terminal, with strict constraints around access, safety, equipment availability, and operational continuity.
Our Approach
RAMEK acted as a key delivery partner, leading multiple subprojects within the overall programme and working collaboratively with operations, infrastructure, planning, and maintenance teams.
Our approach included:
Development of practical, buildable concepts for each subproject
Detailed staging and sequencing plans ensuring uninterrupted terminal operations
Close coordination with straddle engineering teams for equipment upgrade impacts
Safety-in-Design risk reviews across all infrastructure and equipment interfaces
Daily onsite presence to ensure quality, speed, and real time issue resolution
Programme wide alignment of design, construction, and operational requirements
Results / Outcomes
Successful transition to full 4-high capability across Fergusson Terminal
Delivery of multiple sub-projects to high quality and within tight timeframes
Increased yard capacity and improved stack performance
More resilient, future proof terminal layout supporting long term growth
Strong alignment between operational needs and infrastructure delivery
eGate Upgrade Programme (Physical & Digital)
Challenge / Objective
The Port required a full modernisation of its eGate system to improve truck throughput, reliability, and automation capability. This upgrade included both the digital software platform and the physical gate infrastructure: roadway layouts, ducting, cabling, sensors, barriers, lighting, and OCR integrations.
All workstreams had to be managed together, delivered in tight windows, and completed without disrupting live gate operations.
Our Approach
RAMEK served as the overall programme manager, leading both the digital and physical upgrade workstreams from planning through to implementation.
Our approach included:
Coordinating digital platform upgrades, testing, and rollout with IT and system vendors
Managing all physical works, including civil, electrical, and automation infrastructure
Facilitating Safety-in-Design workshops across digital + physical streams
Close collaboration with Infrastructure, Operations, Planning, Security, and IT
Developing and managing detailed staging plans to protect truck flows
Providing on-site engineering support to maintain high-quality delivery
Leading operational readiness activities to ensure smooth transition
Results / Outcomes
Fully upgraded eGate system across digital and physical infrastructure
Faster, more reliable truck processing
More resilient, scalable, and future-ready gate system
Coordinated, integrated delivery across multiple teams and vendors
Zero interruption to live gate operations
