Port of Auckland - Auckland Council Healthy Waters – Critical Infrastructure Works on Port Land

Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters team required access to strategic port land to deliver essential stormwater and infrastructure upgrades.

Challenge / Objective

Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters team required access to strategic port land to deliver essential stormwater and infrastructure upgrades. These works needed to be completed within a highly sensitive and operationally intensive port environment, where safety, security, and continuity of port operations were critical.

Port of Auckland engaged Ramek to act as the Engineer and technical representative, ensuring that all design, planning, and delivery activities aligned with port requirements, operational constraints, and asset protection needs. The objective was to provide a safe, coordinated, and seamless interface between Healthy Waters’ project delivery team and the port’s diverse internal stakeholders.

Our Approach

Ramek took on the role of central conduit between Auckland Council Healthy Waters, their contractors, and the Port of Auckland’s operations, engineering, safety, and property teams.

By ensuring clear, concise, and consistent communication, Ramek enabled early identification of potential operational impacts, hazards, and design conflicts. Our team facilitated all site access, inductions, and permitting requirements, ensuring compliance with port protocols and minimising disruption to daily operations.

Through a combination of engineering knowledge, operational understanding, and practical decision-making, Ramek carried out detailed design reviews, coordinated technical queries, and provided real-time guidance to both the client and delivery teams. This approach maintained alignment, avoided delays, and ensured that the works were delivered safely and efficiently within the port’s unique operating environment.

Results / Outcomes

  • Smooth, efficient engagement between Auckland Council Healthy Waters and Port of Auckland, enabling timely delivery of critical infrastructure upgrades.

  • Zero operational disruptions, achieved through proactive planning and stakeholder coordination.

  • Clear communication pathways established across multiple organisations, reducing ambiguity and improving decision-making.

  • Robust design review and engineering oversight, ensuring full alignment with port standards, asset protection requirements, and long-term operational use.

  • Strong collaborative environment, reinforcing trust between the port, council, and contractors.

Client Testimonial

During the delivery of the Auckland Council, Healthy Waters and Flood Resilience, Ports of Auckland Outfall project, Ramy Mekhael acted as Project Manager representing Port of Auckland’s (POA) interests under the access agreement between POA and Auckland Council. Their role involved coordinating with stakeholders, monitoring compliance with agreed conditions, and facilitating communication between parties to ensure POA’s requirements were addressed throughout the process. This contribution supported the smooth execution of the project within the agreed framework.— Manager Project Services, Gerhard Van Rooyen, Auckland Council Healthy Waters
