Port of Auckland Container Terminal Access Improvements

Port of Auckland Access Major Upgrade

Client: Port of Auckland

Sector: Port & Logistics

Role: Programme Management & Project Engineering (site based)

Duration: 24 Months

Challenge

The port required a comprehensive upgrade of its landside access and logistics infrastructure to improve freight efficiency, enhance security, reduce congestion, and provide a better experience for truck drivers accessing the Fergusson Container Terminal. A key objective was to address vehicle queuing that regularly impacted both port operations and surrounding city traffic networks at the Quay Street / Solent Street gateway to the port.

Ramek's Role

  • Programme management across multiple interrelated projects

  • Coordination of stakeholders, contractors, and operational teams

  • Design and delivery oversight for terminal access upgrades

  • Management of security system upgrades and integration

  • Delivery of enhanced driver welfare and waiting facilities

  • Implementation of the eGate access system and associated operational changes

Programme Scope

  • Upgrade of the two primary entry gates to the Fergusson Container Terminal

  • Implementation of an automated eGate vehicle access system

  • Security infrastructure and technology upgrades

  • Construction of improved driver facilities

  • Integration of operational, technology, and physical infrastructure improvements

Outcomes

  • Delivered a major port access transformation programme over 24 months

  • Reduced truck processing and turnaround times by more than 50%

  • Significantly improved traffic flow and terminal access efficiency

  • Eliminated routine traffic queues at the Solent Street entrance, with no significant congestion experienced for months following implementation

  • Enhanced port security through modernised access control and monitoring systems

  • Improved driver experience through upgraded facilities and streamlined site access

  • Generated positive network-wide benefits by reducing heavy vehicle congestion at the Quay Street / Solent Street entry point, improving traffic flow at a key gateway between the port and central Auckland

Project Impact

The programme delivered a step change in landside logistics performance for Port of Auckland. By combining physical infrastructure upgrades with modern access technology and operational improvements, the project significantly increased terminal efficiency, improved safety and security, and enhanced the experience for freight operators. The reduction in truck queuing has also delivered broader benefits beyond the port boundary, helping to ease congestion at the Quay Street and Solent Street intersection at the base of Parnell and improving traffic conditions for the wider city transport network.

A significant programme of work that has delivered a fabulous outcome for our facilities, our operations, our people and our customers. Long gone are the queues out on Tamaki drive and drivers and their companies are loving the ability to drive straight through the gates! From infrastructure to digital to gate ops to customer, security and all the extended supporters who enabled the implementation a huge well done and thank you! What a incredible milestone for Port of Auckland!
